Droughts Comprehension

Wherever there is a shortage of rain over a long period of time, there is drought. Drought affects plants, animals, and people. It is a serious problem for farmers and for the people who depend on the crops they produce.   Deserts  receive very little rain all year. They are sometimes said to be in a permanent drought.  Drought results from changes in Earth’s  atmosphere . Some droughts are caused by shifts in the winds that normally bring rain to an area.  Severe droughts can last for months or years. When this happens no crops will grow. As a result many people and animals may die of  famine , or lack of food.  Severe droughts often force people and animals to move to find water. Some farmers go to places where they think conditions will be better for their crops and animals. Some people give up farming altogether.  Answer the questions below in complete sentences. Your answers can all be found in the passage.  1. What is a drought? 2. Give two causes of droughts.  3. What is a fam

Comprehension: Caves

A cave is an area or space under the surface of the Earth, in hillsides, or in cliff walls. Most of the time, caves are a  system of connected underground passageways. It’s kind of like an underground maze!  It takes a long, long time for a cave to form, because the natural processes that make a cave are very slow. Over time, acid eats away at the rock and dissolves it, forming a cave passage. Most of these caves take more than 100,000 years to grow big enough to fit a human! Caves called lava tubes are formed when a volcano erupts and lava flows across Earth’s surface. Sea caves form when movement from waves and tides gradually weakens sea cliffs, eroding the rock and creating a cave. Mammals like foxes and  bears ,  insects  like spiders and cockroaches, and reptiles like salamanders and  frogs  all live inside caves. 1. Name 2 places where caves can be found.  2.  What causes the rock to dissolve? 3. Give evidence from paragraph 3 to show that caves take a very long time to form.

An Unpleasant Journey Home Remember: Setting, Characters, Problem, Solution      Kimmy and Mark were making their way home from school. The sky was a sorrowful dark grey and the rain was pouring heavily as they walked. Suddenly, the two friends heard the speeding sounds of a car. They were splashed from head to toe!      Kimmy's eyes filled with tears as she looked down at her wet uniform. The driver didn't even seem to care that he had splashed the children. "Don't worry about it," Mark told her. She cheered up a bit and they continued their walk home.      As they approached Swan Street, Mark burst into laughter. He was giggling and pointing. "What's so funny?" Kimmy asked. She looked into the distance and saw the same driver who had splashed them. He was kneeling next to his car in the pouring rain.      The driver's face was in a frown as he got his tools out. His car had a flat tyre. Although the children felt sorry for him, they were sure

Nocturnal   animals  are animals that are mainly active during the  night . They hunt or feed during the night, and  sleep  during the  day .  They become more active at night to hunt or avoid  heat  and predators.  Nocturnal animals have special characteristics  that let them roam in the dark more effectively. The eyes get bigger and the pupils widen. This helps them to collect more light.  Animals like owls and large cats have special hearing to hunt at night. A cat can move its ears to help him hear better.  Some animals, like snakes, use taste to navigate and locate prey. Some animals, like bats, use echolocation to find food. Bats release a high-pitched sound that bounces off objects, including prey. The echoes tell the bat how far away the objects and prey are.  Answer the questions below in complete sentences.  1. What is a nocturnal animal? 2. Why do some animals come out at night and not during the day? 3. Explain how big eyes help nocturnal animals.  4. How are cats able t
