Literary Techniques: CSEC English

 Alliteration- The same sound starts a series of words or syllables.

The cold, clammy hands grasped my neck.


Hyperbole- An exaggerated statement used for effect and not meant to be taken literally.

  • Waves high as mountains broke over the reef.

  • I had to wait an eternity for the file to download.


Irony- Saying one thing but meaning just the opposite.

Watching it rain, he said, "Lovely day for a picnic."


Onomatopoeia- The sound of the word imitates the original sound.

The car creaked forward / Bees buzz


Paradox-A statement that may be true but seems to say two opposite things.

The child is father to the man.


Personification- Representing ideas as persons, giving them with human attributes.
Example: Time stood still.
