Snorkeling is the practice of swimming through a body of water while equipped with a diving mask, a breathing tube called a snorkel, and usually swimfins. A snorkel is a device used for breathing air from above the surface when the person's face is submerged.

Use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe underwater attractions for a long time without struggling to breathe.

Snorkeling is a popular activity, especially in tropical locations. People are able to observe underwater life in a natural setting. It appeals to all ages because of how easy it can be. Snorkeling requires no special training, only the very basic swimming abilities.

When snorkeling on or near coral reefs, you must be careful to avoid contact with the delicate coral and its poisonous inhabitants.  Snorkeling is best in waters where there few waves, warm water, and something particularly interesting to see near the surface.

Questions

1. What are two pieces of equipment that a person needs to snorkel?

2. Why is snorkeling equipment important?

3. Why is snorkeling described as easy?

4. What word in the last paragraph lets us know that the sea creatures who live in the coral can be dangerous?

5. Why do you think snorkeling is best in waters where there aren't a lot of waves?

And five times a day I was forced to endure this spectacle without participating in it. I never had a cent to my name. I was forced to stand in the background, and the sight of those cakes the pupils bought in a joyous uproar and devoured greedily and freely about me, overwhelmed me with passionate desire.
