MAKEDA:

Left to his own devices, John Adams might have lived out his days as a

Massachusetts country lawyer, devoted to his family and friends. As it was,

events swiftly overtook him, and Adams—who, David McCullough writes,

was "not a man of the world" and not fond of politics—came to greatness

as the second President of the United States, and one of the most distinguished

of a generation of revolutionary leaders. He found reason to dislike narrow-minded

wrangling even more in the aftermath of war, when Federalist and anti—Federalist

factions vied bitterly for power, introducing scandal into an administration beset by

other difficulties—including pirates on the high seas, conflict with France and England,

and all the public controversy attendant upon building a nation.

Which of the following best paraphrases the passage above?

 A. Despite his disdain for politics, John Adams became a great political figure.

B. John Adams would have rather been a small town lawyer than president.

C. John Adams went from country lawyer to the American president.

D. John Adams came to dislike politics more and more throughout his life of service.

Lobsters are easy to cook, a fact that people do not share. They can be broiled or grilled.

They are also delicious when boiled or steamed. Boiling is probably the simplest method.

Just make sure a large stockpot is available. Place the lobsters inside of the pot while

the water is still cool and allow it to heat up. If you drop them into a pot of boiling water,

they may try to climb back out. The cooked lobsters need only melted butter as an

accessory.

Which statement best summarizes this passage?

A. Boiling is the easiest way to cook lobsters. You only need a large stockpot.

B. Lobsters are very easy to cook. They can be cooked in several different ways.

C. Cooked lobsters do not need a lot of different spices. They only need butter.

D. People do not like to share how they cook lobsters. Some people boil them.

Paraphrase:

Women have traditionally been seen as mothers and homemakers and

it is only in recent years that they have been making significant inroads

into the job market. There is still a long way to go before they achieve

complete equality with men but the situation has definitely improved.

Activity 3: Globalisation & Coca-Cola (take turns reading)

The Coca-Cola Company The Coca-Cola company was founded in the United States in 1886. The company set up bottling plants in Canada in 1906. In 1928, it introduced the soft drink Coca-Cola at the Olympic Games which were held in Amsterdam. In the 1940s, the company began to set up bottling plants in countries around the world. Coca-Cola is popular because it has been advertised as a brand of soft drink connected with fun, friends and good times. Its international image was successfully promoted by a 1971 commercial, where a group of young people from all over the world gathered on a hilltop in Italy to sing "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke."
In 1978, the Coca-Cola Company was selected as the only non-Chinese company allowed to sell packaged cold drinks in the People's Republic of China. Today, the company produces nearly 400 brands in over 200 countries. More than 70 percent of the company’s income comes from outside the United States.
Coca-Cola is an extraordinarily successful example of multinationalization. Its success raises the question of why and how it has been so successful. The multinationalization of the Coca-Cola Company is also often used as an example to illustrate the concept of economic globalization.

WRITE THE QUESTION AND THE LETTER YOU CHOOSE.

Read the passage below carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

Snakes are some of the most dangerous animals in a tropical rainforest. Many
snakes are poisonous. They catch frogs, beetles and other small animals on
the rainforest floor and kill them with their poisonous fangs. Other snakes slide
between the branches or wrap themselves around a tree, waiting for their prey.

Some snakes squeeze their prey to death which means that the squeeze is
sometimes as deadly as the bite. An anaconda can squeeze a caiman to death
and then swallow it whole. It may take several days to digest the animal. While
it is doing this, the snake can hardly move. The female anaconda is one of
the world's longest snakes and weighs as much as a horse. This snake is not
poisonous. The yellow anaconda, like all snakes, can swim. Its eyes and nose
are on top of its head so it can see when it hides just under the water.

Snakes are often hard to see. The bright green skin of some snakes blends in
with the plants and trees. Normally snakes wrap around a branch and reach
down to catch a chick from the bird's nest.
It would be wise to choose a different pathway if you are to ever clash with a
snake.

Controversial Leaders

Osama bin Laden

Osama Bin Laden was born in Saudi Arabia. He was the 17th of 52 children fathered by a wealthy and influential millionaire who owned the largest construction business in the Saudi kingdom. Osama had a very privileged upbringing. Though his siblings went to college in the West and then joined his father’s company, Osama bin Laden went to school locally, married young, and joined the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood. Islam shaped all of bin Laden’s political beliefs and had a profound influence on his decision-making. He became a follower of Abdullah Azzam, a radical pan-Islamist scholar, while in college in the late 1970s. Azzam believed there should be a single Islamic state, and that Muslims should join together in jihad (holy war) to make this state a reality. The idea appealed to bin Laden, who resented the extent to which Western culture was influencing Middle Eastern life.

When Muslim rebels called mujahideen came together to fight a jihad against the Soviets, who were supporting communism in the Afghan government, bin Laden supported the mujahideen with money, weapons, and soldiers. When the Soviets finally withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, al-Qaeda was formed for the purpose of fighting future holy wars, and bin Laden became the group’s leader. Al-Qaeda’s focus was not military campaigns, but symbolic acts of terrorism. This movement was not supported by bin Laden’s relatively Western family, so Bin Laden moved to Sudan and carried out his first attack from there. Many other attacks followed, including the devastating attacks on the United States on September 11th, 2001. The U.S. declared war on Afghanistan on October 7, 2001. Known as the leader and prime suspect of the September 11th attacks, Bin Laden went into hiding and remained there until a covert operation by U.S. Navy SEALs killed him at a private compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

1. Osama is said to have a 'privileged' upbringing. Why was this so?

2. What influenced Osama's political views?

3. "...resented the extent to which Western culture was influencing Middle Eastern life". Give examples of the ways in which Western culture may have had a negative influence.

4. What was the original purpose of al-Qaeda?

5. Why do you think that Osama's Western family did not support him?
