Have you ever seen a bird sitting comfortably on a cow’s back? The bird seems most welcome. However, if another creature goes around the cow it will be chased away immediately.

Animals such as the cow, bison, and rhinoceros have ticks and other insects that bite their backs and make them itch. Instinctively, they welcome the birds who visit to feed on these insects thus making them feel so much relieved and better.

In the animal kingdom, there are other instances where animals use the help of other animals to get rid of pests. Scientists call this mutualism. The relationship between the crocodile and the water bird is an example of this mutualism. The crocodile will attempt to eat most birds that come near to it. However, the water birds can walk among the crocodiles and even lay their eggs in the same place with the crocodile without being hurt by the crocodiles because these birds eat the insects that bother them.

It is evident that animals recognise that they need each other to survive, peacefully. Humans too must recognise that we need each other to have a happy world.

1. Why does the writer say ‘the bird seems most welcome’ in the first paragraph?

2. According to the information in the passage, how does the bird help the cow?

3.  Based on the passage which you have just read, what is mutualism?

4. Which word in the passage means happening without delay?

5. How does the way the cow treats unwanted creatures differ from the way the crocodile treats them?

6. What important lesson can humans learn from the cow or crocodile?

Thus I began filling myself with water from the tap, in a corner of the yard and, every now and then, I returned to it, trying to drown my stomach to keep it qui
