Averages

To find the average there are two important steps:


Step 1: Add

Step 2: Divide


Example: The heights of four children are: 60inches, 64 inches, 72 inches and 80 inches. 

    Add: 60 + 64 + 72 + 80 = 276

   Divide:  276 / 4 = 69 inches

 

3. Find the average of 50, 55, 15, 25 and 20. 


4. Here are 6 numbers: 58, 44, 62, 31, 57, 48. Find the average of:

    a. the 3 smallest numbers

    b. the 3 largest numbers


5. What is the average of $12.50, $9.76 and $2.01?


6. The heights of 5 boys are:1.65m, 1.68m, 1.57m, 1.56m and 1.74m. What is the average height of the boys?


7. The table below shows the attendance for Class 4 for one week. 

        Monday    -    26

        Tuesday    -    31

        Wednesday-     29

        Thursday    -   32

        Friday        -  24


What is the average attendance of the class? 


8.  Sam scored 98, 25, 105, 62 and 65 runs in 5 matches. What was the average score per match?


9. Jack earns $ 100 on the first day, $ 60 on the second day, $ 150 on the third day, $ 80 on the fourth day and $ 90 on the fifth day. What was his average earnings?


10. In a series of 4 cricket matches, the runs scored by India and Australia are given below:








a.  What is the average score of India in one match?

b.  What is the average score of Australia in one match?

c.  Which team performed better?


11. Which is more, the average of the 3 even whole numbers from 2 to 6 or the average of the 4 odd whole numbers from 1 to 7?


12. 5 friends deposited $1,200, $3,300, $1,600, $2,400 and $1,500 in a bank account. How big was their average deposit?


13. James went on a 4 day dolphin watching trip . On the first day he saw

250 dolphins, 350 on the second day and 1,000 on the third. On the last

day he spotted 250 dolphins more than on the first day. What was the

average number of dolphins he spotted per day
