Riding the Bus to School

I ride a big blue bus to school. I stand on the corner of our
street with my friends and we wait for the bus.

My friend’s granny waits with us. When it’s raining, she holds an umbrella to keep us dry. Sometimes when it’s cold she brings us hot chocolate.

I leave my house to walk to the bus stop after my parents go to work. I watch the clock so I know when to leave.

Sometimes mummy phones me from her office to remind me. Sometimes she can’t call, so I have to be sure to watch the time.

Our bus driver puts his flashing yellow lights on and then stops right next to us. When he has stopped he turns the red lights on so all the cars will stop. He makes sure we are all sitting down before he starts to go. He watches out for us very carefully.

My friends and I are the first ones to be picked up by the bus. We like to sit behind the  driver and watch while he picks up all the other children.

We know where everyone lives. By the time we get to our school, the bus is almost full.

Sometimes the kids get noisy and the driver tells us to keep it down. He says their noise makes it hard for him to drive safely. I am glad that our bus driver is so careful.

One day a lion was taking a walk. He walked into a net. “Help!” he yelled. “I cannot get out.”
A fat little mouse came running along. She cried, “I will help you!” “Oh!” said the lion. “How can you help? You are too little.” “I can help! You will see,” she cried.
She began biting the net into small bits. When the lion got out, he smiled. He said, “You may be a little mouse, but you are a very big help.”

Mouse and Lion

Mouse and Lion live in the African grasslands. Lion is very large, and Mouse is very small. When Lion roars, the ground shakes. When Mouse squeaks, not even the grass shakes.
One day, Mouse smelled smoke. Mouse ran to find Lion. “Squeak, squeak!” Mouse squeaked. “I smell smoke, Lion! I think there is a fire!” Lion looked around. He smelled the smoke, too. He lowered his huge head, and told Mouse to climb onto his back. Lion raced to the top of the highest hill, with Mouse holding on for dear life.

Lion saw the fire on the edge of the grasslands. He raised his head and roared his mighty roar. All the animals knew that special roar. It meant danger! They gathered their young ones, and ran to safety near the river.

And five times a day I was forced to endure this spectacle without participating in it. I never had a cent to my name. I was forced to stand in the background, and the sight of those cakes the pupils bought in a joyous uproar and devoured greedily and freely about me, overwhelmed me with passionate desire. Thus I began filling myself with water from the tap, in a corner of the yard and, every now and then, I returned to it, trying to drown my stomach to keep it qui
