COMPREHENSION

The three-quarter mile long Welchman Hall Gully is located in the parish of St. Thomas in the centre of Barbados. The gully was formed many years ago when the roofs of caves in the area collapsed. In fact, the geological information shows that this gully is connected to the nearby Harrison's Cave. Before the cave was developed to include a well-defined entryway, local residents entered the cave by way of an opening located in Welchman Hall Gully. Further evidence of the connection of the gully to the cave is provided by a large column near the the southern entrance which was formed by the joining of stalagmites and stalactites. These rock formations are also found in Harrisons's Cave.
Many varieties of tropical plants and trees which include nutmeg, cocoa, clove, coffee and palms are found in the gully. Special efforts are made to highlight the grapefruit tree since some believe that it was here that it originated. The abundance of vegetation offers a glimpse of what the island looked like some 300 years ago. In Welchman Hall Gully, a large number of monkeys find food and shelter and they even use it as a gateway from one gully to another.
The atmosphere is quite humid and the steep rock wall surrounding the gully provides a natural barrier and protection against high winds.

1. How long is the Welchman Hall Gully?

2. How was the Welchman Hall Gully formed?

3. According to the passage, what other place of interest is near to the Welchman Hall Gully?

4. According to the passage, why is so much interest paid to the grapefruit tree?

5. Suggest ONE reason why monkeys might enjoy being in the gully.

6. Suggest one way in which the surrounding rock wall helps with the preservation of the gully.

7. Suggest one reason for protecting the Welchman Hall Gully.
