It was a fine and breezy afternoon. Jessie and her brother were far out at sea fishing. It was a good trip so far. By noon they had already caught five fish. They were now resting and joking in the boat as they enjoyed their snack.
Suddenly and without warning, Jessie's face turned shockingly pale. Her brother Owen, looked at her thinking she had fallen ill. His eyes followed her gaze as she pointed to the starboard side. To his horror, he saw a triangular fin above the water. Hurriedly he dashed to the back of the boat and tried desperately to start the motor. However, it was stuck.

The siblings panicked. They did not know what to do. Jessie armed herself with the oar, preparing to strike the monstrous beast when it attacked. Owen continued to fiddle with the control in an effort to get the motor to start. The triangular fin continued to circle the boat, getting closer with the completion of each circle. As the fin got closer to the boat, the siblings began to think that they were about to meet their doom.
Just as the creature was about to touch the boat, to their huge relief, the motor revved into action. The boat sped off quickly towards the shore. TOMORROW'S CLASS WILL BEGIN AT 9:15

Ten more minutes to go before the end of Spanish class, but Diallo could not focus. During Science and Comprehension classes before, he had been imagining the punishment that he would get from Sir for not having done his homework again. This was the third time this week. He racked his brain to try to come up with a plausible excuse. Maybe he could say that his dog had eaten his assignment. No, he had used that one already. Or maybe his sister threw it in the bin by mistake. Or maybe he could say…. It was hopeless. This had happened too often. Mr. Downes would never believe him. Diallo could just picture the sarcastic grin which would stretch across his thin lips as he set out the punishment.
Brrrring! That sound broke his concentration. It was the bell to signal the end of Spanish class. Beads of perspiration formed across Diallo’s forehead as Mr. Hoyte left and he watched his classmates remove their Maths books from their bags. He glanced down at the desk which was noticeably bare and waited like a prisoner doomed to his fate.
He heard footsteps echoing down the corridor and stop outside the classroom door. Slowly, slowly, the door to the classroom was pushed inward with an agonizing creak. The blood pounded loudly in his eardrums as he held his breath! It was…Ms Rochester, the secretary. She smiled sweetly and informed that Mr. Downes was absent and that the substitute, Mr. Gill, would be teaching them that day.
Diallo let out an audible sigh of relief and his face broke into a wide grin. This is definitely not going to happen again, he thought to himself. Next time, I might not get away.

Science

How do we See?

Watch:

The reason people can see words on paper or the bright light of the moon at night, it is because of the human eyes.

The eye is situated inside a hollow area of the skull called the eye socket. The eyelid protects the front part of the eye keeping it clean and moist by blinking. Blinking is both voluntary, meaning it can be controlled, and involuntary, meaning it sometimes happens automatically. When the eyelid blinks automatically, it is a reflex. This reflex occurs when the eyes need to adjust to bright light, or when they are needed to shut quickly for protection. The eyelids keep dirt and other substances from entering a person's eyes.

The white part of the eye is the sclera. The sclera is the outer covering of the eyeball, which is made of very tough material. The cornea is a transparent dome that is located in front of the colored part of your eye. It helps with the focusing of the eye when light enters. It is a very difficult part to see because it is made of clear tissue. Think of the cornea as a window the person's eye sees through.

Located behind the cornea is the iris, which is the colorful part of the eye. A person does not have blue or brown eyes, but blue or brown irises. There are muscles attached to the iris that change its shape, which controls the amount of light going through the pupil. The pupil is the black circle in the middle of the iris and lets the light enter the eye. The pupils adjust to the light by opening wider when more light is needed and shrinks when there is plenty of light available.

When light enters the eye it next hits the lens, which is located behind the iris. It focuses light rays on the back of the eyeball to the retina. This part is home to millions of cells that are sensitive to light. The retina takes the light and changes it to signals which are sent to the brain. The brain in turn is able to tell a person what they are seeing. The image received in the eye is actually upside down when the optic nerve, like a high speed telephone line, sends the signal to the brain, When the brain receives it, though, the image seen is flipped right-side up. This happens so fast; a person won't even realize what is happening between the eyes and brain.

1. What are the TWO functions of the eyelid?

2. Explain the difference between voluntary and involuntary eye movements.

3. Why is it difficult to identify the cornea?

4. To what is the cornea compared?

5. Give an example of when a person's pupil might shrink.

6. How does the brain help us to see?
