MENTAL MATH

COMPREHENSION

Read the following passage carefully.

Remember to read the passage more than once. To help to improve your vocabulary awareness and improve your comprehension, underline unfamiliar words in the passage, make a list of them and note their meanings in your book.

Here are some words from the passage below.

exerted     ferocious     generous     carnivores     belief     prey

Have you ever been bitten by someone? I am sure that you will agree that a bite can be very painful. Scientists have made an instrument (a bite force transducer) to measure the power of a bite. The transducer measures the number of pounds per square inch (psi) exerted when a bite is made. To help you understand, consider a human biting into a piece of steak. He will use between 150/200 psi.

The most ferocious dogs have a bite force of about 600 psi. Lions and tigers generate about 1000psi. Their bite force is expectedly high since these carnivores use their powerful bites to rip prey apart. For many years the world thought that the most powerful bite force came from the Great White Shark. This belief was proven wrong when bite tests were carried out using the force transducer. The shark exerted a bite force up to 1 000 psi. However, the crocodile’s bite force was at a stunning 5 000 psi. Scientists explain that sharks have razor-sharp teeth and hence their bite force will not be as powerful as crocodile since they will be able to rip through flesh easily.

Next time you visit the zoo or see a crocodile, keep your distance. If your hand or foot gets in his mouth, it will be impossible to open his mouth to get it out. Remember his bite is almost ten times more powerful than the most ferocious pit bull.

1. According to the passage, what is a bite force transducer?

2. As used in the passage, what does the abbreviation psi mean?

3. Why do scientists expect the shark to rip through flesh easily?

4. In the last paragraph, what useful advice is given by the writer?

5. Why do you think the writer uses the example of a human biting into a steak in the first paragraph?

6. What part of speech is the word razor as used in the passage?

7. Why is the bite force of lions and tigers expected to be higher than a dog’s?

8. Which word in the passage means applying force or pressure?

9. Why do you think the writer described the bite of the crocodile as stunning?

10. What is the main idea of the final paragraph?

Specific Objectives: At the end of this lesson students should be able to;

1 Define the hire purchase term.

2. Explain the application/link of hire purchase in real life situations.

2. Give examples of hire purchase in today’s society

3. State the formula that is used when finding hire purchase price.

4.1 Use the formula to solve hire purchase problems.

Hire Purchase

Hire purchase (HP) is a way of buying goods gradually. You make regular payments until you have paid the full price and the goods belong to you.

IMPORTANT TERMS:

  • Deposit / Downpayment

  • Installments

  • Interest

  • Cash Price

A television can be bought by making a deposit of $200 and 7 monthly instalments of $45. Calculate the total HP price.

Step 1: Calculate the total instalments.
$45 x 7 = $315

Step 2: Add the instalments to the deposit.
$315 + $200
=$515

HP price = $515

The newest Nintendo Switch costs $950 cash. I will buy it on hire purchase by making a deposit of $300. Then I will make monthly payments of $90 for 10 months.

a. Calculate the total HP price.

b. Calculate the difference between the HP price and the cash price. (interest)

    Monthly instalments = $90 x 10 = $900

HP price = Deposit + Instalments

                            $300  + $900

                            = $1200

Interest = HP Price - Cash Price

                      $1200     -    $950

                        = $250

Use the internet to find 3 facts about the Titanic and its demise.

The Titanic must be one of the most famous ships ever built. She set off on her maiden voyage in April 1912, crossing from Southampton in England to New York City in America. In between, she would make stops at France and Ireland. The Titanic was such a huge ship that she weighed more than 46 000 tons and was about 270 meters long.

Thought to be virtually unsinkable, she was built such that any flooded compartment could be sealed off quickly and easily, preventing the spread of water through the ship. Passengers would then have ample time to be rescued since the builders of the ship believed that in the worst scenario, the Titanic would probably take two to three days to be completely submerged.

That fateful night, the temperature was close to zero degree Celsius. Two lookouts stationed at a high point on the ship were freezing but they had to be alert to watch for any signs of danger that the giant ship might face. In that temperature, icebergs-huge mountains of ice floating in the sea -- were a constant threat. It was already close to midnight, so the darkness that surrounded them greatly impeded their field of vision. Even if they perceived any dangerous icebergs, it might be too late to avert a disaster. The moonless sky only worsened the situation.

Then the worst happened. One of the lookouts spotted a huge iceberg right in the path of the Titanic. He immediately rang the alarm. The captain of the ship reacted just as promptly and ordered the Titanic to change her direction. For a few moments, it seemed as if a disaster had been avoided as the Titanic glided past the iceberg. Then suddenly, the ship hit the ice. As a result of the huge size of the ship, the passengers did not feel much of the impact, but the damage was done. The first six compartments of the ship were flooded and immediately sealed off. However, the six compartments were located at the front of the ship. The additional weight caused it to tilt forward. Consequently, sea water entered the ship again. The front of the ship became so heavy that the propellers, located at the end of the ship, were lifted out of the water.

The captain realized that all the passengers would have to be evacuated. Yet, all the lifeboats combined could only save less than half the passengers on the ship.

At 2.20 a.m., the Titanic vanished below the sea. Along with her went more than 1500 people, including the captain, the designer of the ship and many famous people. In just about three hours, the Titanic ironically went from being an unsinkable ship to a ship that lay at the bottom of the ocean.

Thus I began filling myself with water from the tap, in a corner of the yard and, every now and then, I returned to it, trying to drown my stomach to keep it qui
