Algebra Basics

This will help with change of subject, simultaneous equations of lines, variation, and coordinate geometry

Algebra is the branch of Maths that uses alphabetical letters to find unknown numbers.

These letters are also called variables.

The values which are known in the given expression such as numbers are called constants.

The general arithmetic operations performed in the case of algebra are:

Addition: x + y

Subtraction: x – y

Multiplication: xy

Division: x/y or x ÷ y

Simplifying Expressions

Collecting like terms means simplifying terms in expressions in which the variables are the same. In the expression $5 a + 2 b + 3 a - 6 b$ , the terms $5 a$ and $+ 3 a$ are like terms, as are $2 b$ and $- 6 b$ .
