Revision - Hire Purchase


Hire Purchase refers to paying for an item over a period of time. 

This time may be given in months or years. 


IMPORTANT TERMS:

  • Deposit / Downpayment

  • Installments


EXAMPLE: 


The newest Nintendo Switch costs $950 cash. I will buy it on hire purchase by making a deposit of $300. Then I will make monthly payments of $90 for 10 months. Calculate the total Hire Purchase price.

  1. Calculate the total monthly payments = ($90 x 10) = $900

  2. Add it to the deposit = $900 + $300 Total HP price =$1200



1. Tom wants to buy a TV through H.P. He has been asked to make a deposit of $200. The remainder will be paid in 8 monthly instalments at $20 each month. Calculate the total HP price.


2. Mr. Joseph pays $400 down on a furniture set and is charged $375 for the next 24 months. How much did Mr. Joseph pay for the furniture altogether?




3. A bicycle can be bought on hire purchase by making a deposit of $69.00 and 10 monthly instalments of $24.10 each. Calculate the total HP price.


4. Kianna is buying the new iPhone. She will make a deposit of $56.00 and then make monthly payments of $40 for 2 years. Calculate the total that she will pay.



The newest Apple earpods cost $250 cash. I will buy them on hire purchase by making a deposit of 10%. Then I will make monthly payments of $30 for 10 months.

Wages - Calculating Annual Pay

Important Timelines

1 month = (approx. 4 weeks)
1 year = 52 weeks
1 year = 12 months

When you are given the monthly pay and you need to calculate the annual/yearly pay, multiply by 12. 
When you are given the annual pay and you need to calculate the monthly pay, divide by 12.


1. Justin earns $2140 each month at his job. What is his annual salary?
