Activity 2 - Composition

The Class Party

It was going to be a big day. I was so excited. It was the last day of school. My class worked very hard this term and our teacher, Mrs. Browne, promised us a class party.
When I walked into my class that morning, the yummy smell of pizza, hotdogs and even the sweet scent of cakes made me feel so good! There were even decorations on the wall. Mrs. Browne had stuck some of our art work to board and it looked beautiful.
We all helped Mrs. Browne to move the furniture out of the way. We made space for games like musical chairs and pictionary. Music was playing and some of us danced a little bit.

"Everybody! Come to the table,"Mrs. Browne said as she opened a large white box. Inside was the most delightful rainbow cake. "You all have worked so hard this year. This cake is my gift to each of you!" she said. My mouth was almost watering as I looked at the dazzling sparkles and icing on the cake.
She cut a slice for all of us and we all ate. It was such a fun day and the perfect last day of school!

Read the passage. List the verbs in the passage.

The boys were coming home from school. They were looking at the house at the corner. A dog was standing near the gate. It was watching the boys. The boys were picking up stones. The dog was preparing to run.

Ducky Duck had a pretty umbrella. It was red and white with a shiny black handle. Ducky Duck always took her umbrella when she was going out. She took it when it looked as if it would rain. She took it with her when it was sunny because it was such a pretty umbrella and she liked it so much. One day Ducky Duck’s umbrella gave her a surprise. She was going to Pinky Pig birthday party. She wore a red and white polka dot dress, a red hat, a pair of red shoes and she took her red and white umbrella with her. She was in a hurry because she thought she was late for the party. Suddenly she heard the sound of thunder.

Can you imagine how it sounded?
Bang! Bang! Crash! Crash! Boom! Boom!
It got louder and louder and louder.
Ducky Duck opened her umbrella. She heard raindrops, pitter-patter, pitter-patter, pitter patter on her umbrella. She splashed along in a great hurry.
“Oh my goodness! My shoes are getting wet. I wish I could fly to that party instead of
splashing through all these puddles.”

Suddenly she felt herself going up, up, up. She held her umbrella.
She was flying through the air at a fast rate. She looked down and
she saw Pinky Pig’s house.
“Oh my goodness!” she said. “I’m here already.”
The umbrella brought her down.
Bumpity! Bumpity! Bump!
Bumpity! Bumpity! Bump!
Ducky Duck was so proud that she wanted her friends to see her. She looked around, but as

Haley and the Puppy

Haley was outside when she saw the puppy come scrambling into her backyard.
What a cute puppy, she thought. The puppy bounded over to her and began to lick her. Haley giggled. She held up the puppy. The puppy did not have a
collar. “I wonder if this puppy belongs to anyone,” Haley said.

She took the puppy inside to show her mother. “Do not name the puppy,” her mother said. “This puppy belongs to someone else. We will put up signs. Surely someone will claim this puppy.” So they made signs and put them up all over the neighborhood. Haley’s mother also put an ad in the newspaper.

A week went by, and no one called about the puppy.
Haley was secretly happy. During the week Haley had started to love the puppy. She fed him twice a day and took him out for walks. She called him Racer because
of how fast he ran around the house.

Every night before she went to sleep, Haley wished that she would be able to keep the puppy. “I’m sure someone will call about this puppy,” her mother kept saying.

But another week went by and nobody called. Then Haley had an idea. She went into the kitchen and used the phone there to call her mother’s cell phone. When her mother answered the phone, Haley said, “I am calling about the puppy. I would like to keep it.”

At first Haley’s mother was surprised. Then she
laughed. “I guess this is your puppy now, Haley!”
her mother said.

And five times a day I was forced to endure this spectacle without participating in it. I never had a cent to my name. I was forced to stand in the background, and the sight of those cakes the pupils bought in a joyous uproar and devoured greedily and freely about me, overwhelmed me with passionate desire. Thus I began filling myself with water from the tap, in a corner of the yard and, every now and then, I returned to it, trying to drown my stomach to keep it qui
