The Olympics

People all over the world watch the Olympic Games on TV, cheer on their country's athletes, and get into the spirit of friendly competition. But, how many people know why they were created?

The first Olympic Games in recorded history took place in 776 BC in Greece. Athletes competed in running, long jump, shot put, boxing, and other events. These ancient games were dedicated to the Olympian gods.

The aim was to show off the physical strength of the youth and encourage unity. That unity is the reason for the five interlocking rings on the Olympic flag. They represent the continents of North and South America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and Australia coming together.

In the ancient Games, only the winner was celebrated. Each winner was given a simple crown of olive leaves to wear on his head. This was the only reward for his victory. Those who came in second or third got nothing. Now, of course, we have gold medals for first place, silver for second and bronze for third.
