The Concorde plane was an enormous, graceful bird in flight. Its landing wheels were about four feet in diameter. Remarkably, it reached a top speed of about 690m.p.h. It passed the test to fly passengers in 1947 and its first supersonic passenger plane flew 19 years later in 1976. The regular Concorde destinations were: London, Paris, New York and Barbados. The Concorde first came to Barbados in 1977 to take Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth back to England. Since Barbados was one of the four regular destinations to which the Concorde traveled, it was for this reason after the Concorde fleet was retired in 2003, British Airways loaned Concorde G-BOAE to the people of Barbados in recognition of the role that the island played in Concorde’s success.

This tremendously imposing state-of-the-art machinery is located in very close proximity to the Grantley Adams International Airport. The aircraft is resting at The Concorde Museum which was designed under the sponsorship of the Barbados Hotel Association, Goddards Shipping and Tours and the Barbados Museum. The Concorde experience, as it is called, is a thrill to behold. When patrons visit the Museum they get an opportunity to fly the Concorde in a simulation exercise. It is said that although this is not a real experience it sends sensations throughout the whole body as one guides the plane along the runway on a screen in the forefront. This is indeed a most interactive experience which should be enjoyed by everyone.

The following questions are about the passage you have just read. In the space provided, use complete sentences to the questions. Use correct spelling and grammar.

1. According to the passage what does the Concorde resemble when it is in flight?

2. For how many years did the Concorde fly?

3. How many destination points did the Concorde have?

4. In which year did the Concorde first land in Barbados?

5. What was the purpose of that inaugural flight to Barbados?

6. What part of speech is the word ‘tremendously’ in line 9?

 7. Which does a ‘simulation exercise’ in paragraph four mean?

 8. What is the Concorde experience?

What is the healthiest thing you enjoy eating?
What is the unhealthiest thing you enjoy eating?

******************

Food keeps us healthy and help us grow. Food provides us with energy to be able to function throughout the day. By eating a balanced diet, your body obtains the fuel and nutrients it needs to function properly.

Your body needs minerals to make hormones, build bones and regulate your heartbeat. Water flushes out toxins, transports nutrients to cells and performs other vital bodily processes.

 Carbohydrates

Bread, rice and potatoes are examples of carbohydrate-rich foods. These foods give us plenty of energy. You should try and eat a lot of carbohydrates each day. As well as energy, carbohydrates provide us with fibre, iron, B vitamins and calcium.

Fruit and Vegetables

Fruit and vegetables provide us with vitamins and minerals essential for keeping us healthy as well as fibre which is important for digestion. A diet high in fibre can also reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers. Try to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Remember that potatoes do not count as a portion of vegetables.

Dairy

1. Dairy products are great sources of protein

and calcium and are found in milk, cheese and

yogurt. Protein helps our bodies to grow or

repair themselves. Protein builds, maintains,

and replaces the tissues in your body. Your

muscles, organs, and immune system are made

up mostly of protein. Calcium helps to keep our

bones and teeth strong. We should eat between

two or three portions of dairy foods a day.

Meat, Fish, Eggs and Beans

These foods are a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals in your diet. These foods help the body to grow and repair itself and keep hair, skin, muscles and nails strong. We should eat some of these foods a day.

Foods High in Fats and Sugar

These foods provide the body with energy, warmth and insulation around vital organs. Too much fat in your diet can raise cholesterol, which increases the risk of heart disease. A small amount of fat is part of a healthy, balanced diet. Fat is a source of essential fatty acids such as omega-3 because the body can’t make them itself. Fat helps the body absorb vitamins A, D and E.

To be healthy, nutritious food is needed to provide energy for the body. A variety of food is needed in the diet because different foods contain different substances that are needed to keep you healthy.

Questions:

1. Why is a balanced diet important?

2. What is the function of protein?

3. Can you give examples of foods that we should try and avoid eating excessive amounts of? Why should we limit our intake of these foods?

4. Choose the word closest in meaning to the underlined word.

With a balanced diet, your body obtains the fuel and nutrients it needs to function properly.

a) necessary         b) optional

 c) excellent     d) extra

5. Fruit and vegetables provide us with vitamins and minerals essential for keeping us healthy.   a) rest         b) work         c) eat         d) healthy

Activity:

Time to write!

Imagine you are a journalist in a children’s magazine. Write a paragraph about why it is important for school-aged children to have a balanced diet.

Sea turtles are in danger of becoming extinct. These turtles face both natural threats and human-caused threats. These threats are not the main reason why the sea turtle population has plummeted towards extinction.

Humans consume the eggs and meat of these turtles. Sea turtles become entangled in the nets of fishermen. They also become entangled in marine debris which passengers throw overboard boats. Not only do they become entangled in this debris but they also eat the debris and die. Plastic bags, bottles, balloons and pellets are all deadly meals for sea turtles .Artificial lighting from houses and hotels that humans build along the beach discourages females from nesting and causes hatchlings to wander inland where they often die.
